MidKent College Freshers Fair – a little bit of politics!

Trish Marchant says: Medway Green Party were pleased to attend the Freshers Fair at Mid Kent College in Gillingham this week and had the opportunity to meet both students and tutors. I would like to thank the college for allowing us to “do politics” and talk about the Medway political scene to people who may not know what we as a party stand for.

More importantly though I want to thank the college and tutors for providing such an inspirational environment and encouraging the young men and women of the towns. We met some lovely people, mixed abilities, different career paths, varied needs, but all keen, enthusiastic, and pleased to be there.

I studied a couple of times at the Horsted campus in the 80’s and while the surroundings may not have been as majestic as they are now the spirit of learning was strong and that has clearly continued.  Medway Council make much of the towns having universities but Mid-Kent is stuffed full of local young people who, like me and my contemporaries back in the 80’s, are not wholly focussed on the academic but on the practical, physical skills that are the foundations of our society.

I hope that the forthcoming budget cuts don’t inhibit the college in its aims and that it continues to flourish over the coming years. I also hope that the parents of the college understand and recognise what a great environment their children are in.
